A major exhibition that celebrates the life, work and influences of Angela Carter twenty five years after her death. Echoing Carter’s recurring themes of feminism, mysticism, sexuality and fantasy, the exhibition includes historically significant works by Marc Chagall, William Holman Hunt, Paula Rego, Dame Laura Knight, Leonora Carrington and John Bellany, on loan from major national collections.

Stephen Smith, Hestercombe’s 2016 artist in residence, presents new work for the Shifting Ground exhibition, the culmination of his six-month residency at Hestercombe Gallery. Predominantly working with painting, drawing, print and installation, Stephen’s work is bold, contemporary and quirky. His confident collaged mark making and use of bright colours makes his work instantly recognisable. He describes his latest body of work as ‘exploring conspiracy theories, bit-rot, psycho-geography and post-traumatic landscapes leading to human’s interaction with and on the landscape’. His paintings will be complemented with works by Frank Auerbach, Elisabeth Frink, Geoffrey Clarke, John Tunnard, Terry Frost, Roger Hilton, Patrick Heron and Lynn Chadwick which have kindly been loaned from The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art. These have been selected by the artist and give further historical context to his processes.

Never does light seem more vital than when the nights draw in and the clouds gather. The artists in this exhibition celebrate and explore light in its many forms. Radiance can be subtle. It can be moonlight on snow or reflected on water, refracted and diffused in mist, churned up in waves. It can be sunrise and sunset, sea light and wide open land light, rainbows and light effects. We live with these miracles of nature every day but in this show they are caught, transformed and re-presented to our perceptions. The exhibition includes work from Daisy Cook, Luke Elwes, Michael Bennallack Hart, Stephen Jacobson, Janette Kerr, Alex Lowery, Emma Stibbon, Amanda Wallwork, woodcarvings by David West, and furniture by Petter Southall.
