“My paintings are wilfully inconsistent. The fact that they look like the work of different artists is indicative of what I am trying to achieve. Over time my working ethos has moved towards an acceptance that the act of using paint on a flat surface to interpret what I see and feel frequently requires the invention of an entirely different pictorial structure. The process of bringing such structures into being deepens my understanding and, at its best, reveals a little more of the subjects essence. I rely on my intuition and a world heritage of rich pictorial languages to dictate the degree of distortion. This means being prepared to explore the entire range of possible solutions, from the figurative at one end of the spectrum to a flirtation with abstraction at the other.”
