‘SAWDUST AND SEQUINS: THE ART OF THE CIRCUS’
24 March - 3 June
Sawdust and Sequins is a major exhibition of historic and contemporary art that marks the UK’s distinct circus heritage and the contemporary circus scene alive in Bristol today. From historical depictions of familiar circus scenes to contemporary works exploring both the glamour and grit, this exhibition surveys the complex, compelling nature of circus.
Featured artists include Peter Blake, Eileen Cooper, Beth Carter, PJ Crook, Simon Quadrat, Abigail Lane, Sadie Tierney, Katharine Jones, Susie Hamilton, Laura Knight, Edward Seago, Walter Sickert, David Bomberg, Duncan Grant, Robert Colquhoun and Thérèse Lessore.
An exhibition of Peter Lavery’s circus photography will accompany the exhibition. His intimate, tell-all portraits document the unseen reality of life in the circus from the 1970s to the present day.
